The UralMotorSport team truck was seriously damaged due to a fire on the second day of racing at the Russian Hills Baja; everything is fine for Igor Chagin’s crew, the team’s press service reports.
The race is held in the Ulyanovsk region. Igor Chagin is the son of the seven-time winner of the Dakar Rally marathon Vladimir Chagin.
“Both of our crews significantly increased the pace compared to previous stages, which naturally led to more brake heating. As a rule, the airflow while driving prevents a fire from occurring, but if the car stops, the risk of fire is high, which happened to Igor Chagin’s crew – a tire was punctured and a stop was necessary to quickly replace it at a special stage.
Fires of this type are not uncommon in motorsport, so we are faced with such a situation. Luck was not on our side: the flames spread to the steering wheel, and then to the entire car. The crew tried to stop the flames, unfortunately without success.
The car was badly damaged and is out of the race, but as we said earlier, the health and safety of the team members is our top priority, so now the most important thing is that the crew is well,” the team said in a statement.
Bach “Hills of Russia” is the fourth and final stage of the 2024 Russian Rally Raid Championship.
