The second week of the grass-court season was marked on the ATP Tour by a prestigious 500 category tournament in Halle, Germany. The four Russians who are in the top 50 of the classification will start there. However, already after the first round of the competition, our country will lack its representatives. The first to leave the fight, which was a big surprise, was Andrei Rublev, who lost to Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili (6:7, 4:6). Unfortunately, either Aslan Karatsev or Karen Khachanov will inevitably follow, as the Russians will be playing among themselves for a ticket to the second round of the competition.
In the ATP Tour, tennis players have met three times and so far the advantage is on Khachanov’s side. Karen has won two matches at tournaments in St. Petersburg (2020) and Toronto (2021). Aslan beat Khachanov in the Kremlin Cup semi-finals (7:6, 6:1) last season, after which he won the tournament. Before that, the Russians met three times at the Challengers, in these matches Karen also had an advantage with a score of 2: 1.
Interestingly, Karatsev’s win last year came at a time when Aslan was higher in the ATP rankings than Karen. At the moment, Khachanov is at the beginning of the third ten, and Karatsev, due to his not the best performance lately, has lost a dozen positions and is currently in 40th place. In cases where Khachanov was ahead of his compatriot in the standings, Karen always won.
