Sunday evening August 13, Russian Lyudmila Samsonova will compete to reach the final of the prestigious tournament in Montreal with the WTA 1000 category. She will face a tennis player born and residing in Moscow, but who currently represents Kazakhstan. Therefore, at the official level, the confrontation between Lyudmila Samsonova and Elena Rybakina will not be considered Russian. But only at the official level.

Both tennis players are 24 years old. They are in the top 20 of the WTA rankings. Samsonova and Rybakina held two meetings between themselves. Both were won by Lyudmila. Interestingly, for the first time their confrontation was fair at the Montreal tournament in 2021. Then, as part of the first round, the Russian took over in three sets – 6:4, 5:7, 6:4. Last year, Lyudmila and Elena faced each other in Tokyo. This fight also happened in the first round. This time the representative of Russia won in straight sets – 6:2, 6:4. Now, Samsonova and Rybakina will face each other to reach the final of a prestigious tournament, which means that the match promises to be very tense.

During the Montreal tournament, the two tennis players improved their WTA rating. Elena Rybakina moved up to third place, overtaking American Jessica Pegula. There are only two tennis players left on the tour above Elena – Arina Sobolenko and Iga Shventek. Lyudmila Samsonova fell from 18th to 15th place. The Russian is about to repeat her own record. Once Lyudmila is already the 12th racket in the world (in February this year) and in the event of a victory over Rybakina, our tennis player will again be 12th in the WTA ranking.

Note that during the Montreal tournament, Samsonova was able to present the main sensation by beating Arina Sobolenko in the 1/8 finals (7:6, 4:6, 6:3). Also worth noting is Lyudmila’s victory over Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic in the quarter-finals of the tournament (6:4, 6:4). The Russian won those matches yesterday.
