Five-time Olympic speed skating champion Claudia Pechstein intends to sue the International Skating Union (ISU) for eight million euros as compensation for erroneous disqualification, said the athlete’s lawyer Thomas Summerer.
In 2009, the ISU disqualified Pechstein for two years due to abnormal blood levels. The German appealed, but lost at every sporting court, including the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and the Swiss Federal Court. His complaint against the ISU was accepted by the Munich Higher Regional Court.
“Our claim for damages now amounts to eight million euros. We expect the regional court to award this amount,” Summerer was quoted as saying by Sportschau.
Due to his disqualification, Pechstein was forced to miss the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver. In February 2022 in Beijing, the German speed skater became the first woman to participate in eight Winter Olympics.
Pechstein is a five-time Olympic champion and has two silver and two bronze medals at the Games. The German has started at every Olympic Games since 1992, with the exception of Vancouver 2010.
