Italian football clubs AC Milan and Inter Milan expect to reveal final architectural plans for their new San Siro stadium in Milan by early November.
The two Serie A rivals are moving forward with planning in order to start construction work in the summer of 2027, immediately after the conclusion of the playing season.
Architecture firms Foster + Partners and Manica are completing the final details of the design and official presentation. Both firms previously worked on the design of the new Wembley Stadium in London. According to information released so far, the new venue will retain certain elements referencing the historic Giuseppe Meazza Stadium.
AC Milan and Inter Milan have already announced that the new stadium will feature approximately 71,500 seats, with more than 13,000 assigned to the premium category. The upcoming reveal of the stadium layout is expected to give concrete form to a project previously confined to blueprints.
San Siro timeline aligned with Euro 2032
AC Milan and Inter Milan have shared the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium, widely known as the San Siro, since 1947. Located in the San Siro district of Milan, the stadium opened in 1926 and was named after Italian footballer Giuseppe Meazza, who represented both clubs during his career.
The Mayor of Milan, Beppe Sala, sent a new message to both clubs asking them to respect the project schedule. Sala said he hoped the clubs would present the new stadium renderings very soon and guarantee that the venue will be ready for Euro 2032.
The 2032 European Championship acts as the main driver for the schedule. The project plan calls for the new stadium to be completed in 2031, leaving it available one year before the tournament takes place.
Meeting that target requires completing all necessary administrative procedures by the summer of 2027 so construction can start in the second half of the year. Required milestones include environmental assessments, technical studies, and final regulatory approvals.
Site preparation work and pending court appeals
Euro 2032 will be joint-hosted by Italy and Turkey. The design team brings past experience from high-profile sports projects, including London's Wembley Stadium.
Both teams will continue playing matches at the current stadium while the new venue is constructed alongside it. The partial demolition of the old Giuseppe Meazza Stadium will take place only after the new ground is built.
Surrounding areas are already undergoing transformation. Demolition crews knocked down the south side ticket booth in June, while parking capacity around the arena will shrink as work advances. The total cost of the new stadium is estimated at approximately 2.149 billion euros.
Meanwhile, legal challenges filed with Italy's Regional Administrative Court, known as the TAR, remain unresolved, with a court decision expected in the coming period. Despite those obstacles, AC Milan and Inter Milan are pushing ahead to avoid further delays to one of Italy's largest sports infrastructure investments.
