AEK Athens sit in 16th place in the Champions League standings following the completion of matchday one in the league phase. Greek forward Tasos Douvikas scored as Italian debutants Como achieved an impressive 4-1 victory over German side RB Leipzig on Thursday, September 10.
Douvikas found the back of the net in the 38th minute to extend Como's lead to 2-0 during the club's first game in Champions League history. The victory placed the Italian team among the sixteen sides that earned three points in their opening fixture.
Elsewhere in Thursday's matches, German club Bayern Munich thrashed Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt 5-0. At Old Trafford, English Premier League side Manchester United recorded a comfortable 4-0 win against Azerbaijani team Sabah.
French club Lens achieved a dramatic away victory against Czech Republic side Slavia Prague, scoring two goals in stoppage time to seal a 3-2 win. In other action, Turkish club Fenerbahce drew 1-1 with Italian side Roma, while Dutch team PSV Eindhoven drew 1-1 against Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk.
Champions League Standings and Structure
Following matchday one, AEK Athens occupy 16th position in the 36-team standings. Under the format of the Champions League league phase, teams finishing in positions one through eight earn direct qualification to the round of 16. Clubs finishing in ninth to 24th place progress to a play-off round to compete for a place in the last 16, while teams occupying positions 25 to 36 are eliminated.
Sixteen clubs earned three points from their opening fixtures, including Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Manchester United, Como, Sporting Lisbon, Stuttgart, Manchester City, Aston Villa, Lens, Betis, Dortmund, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Arsenal, and AEK Athens.
