Volleyball player Aixa Vigil has revealed her plans to leave the Peruvian league and return to playing for overseas clubs after one final season.
The 24-year-old player, considered one of the top athletes in the Peruvian Volleyball League, recently signed for Universitario de Deportes, the team she described as the club of her heart. Speaking on the program En Pared, Vigil said she hopes for a strong 2026 season with Universitario before departing.
Reasons for leaving Peru
Vigil stated that she is working to make this upcoming year her last in the local tournament. She explained that she finds the volleyball environment in Peru very toxic for her, which has driven her desire to return to foreign competitions.
Although she received important offers to play abroad earlier, Vigil decided to remain in Peru for one more season. She said she wanted to leave with peace of mind, ensure she is physically complete, and provide additional help to her family before moving.
National team goals and career background
In addition to her club career, Vigil spoke about her targets with the Peruvian national volleyball team. She expressed a strong desire to qualify for the World Cup at the South American Championship, scheduled for September in Brazil.
Vigil said the national team is fully focused on the task. She noted that head coach Rizola has intensified training in recent weeks to prepare for the heavy competition in Brazil, clearly identifying which opponents the team must beat to secure a spot at the World Cup.
Vigil previously played for clubs in the United States between 2018 and 2022. Her career history includes stints with Universidad César Vallejo in Peru, Polk State College and Oral Roberts University in the United States, as well as Alianza Lima, Universidad San Martín, and Universitario de Deportes in Peru.
