Australian tennis player Alex de Minaur was eliminated from the third round of the Montreal Masters 1000 on Thursday, August 6, following a three-set defeat against Britain's Cameron Norrie.
The 27-year-old world number seven and Sydney native started strongly against the world number 37, even securing a match point. However, the top-ranked Australian collapsed following a frustrating sequence of play, ultimately losing 5-7, 7-6, 6-1.
Known for his tenacity and composure, the right-handed player struggled to control his nerves during the contest. The tension became apparent early in the match, with tournament broadcasters capturing a heated exchange between the player and his team in the stands.
Court Outburst With Coach
After half an hour of play, while trailing 2-4 in the first set, de Minaur used a brief timeout to grab a towel and approach his coaches. He asked one of them, who appeared to be Matt Reid, what he should do on the court.
The coach offered tactical advice regarding Norrie's topspin forehand. De Minaur reacted angrily to the suggestion, swearing at his coach and telling him that he should come onto the court and try playing himself.
Despite the early friction, de Minaur pushed the match into a deciding set before his game faltered completely in the final stage.
Post-Match Assessment
In his post-match press conference, the recent Rotterdam Open champion criticized his level of play and described the third set as catastrophic. He noted that he had early break point opportunities, having reached 0-30 and 0-40 on Norrie's serve, but failed to capitalize on them.
De Minaur acknowledged that he followed up with several poor points, quickly falling behind as control of the match slipped away. He said the defeat was a missed opportunity given that he had been in a strong position, adding that managing such moments is a specific area he needs to work on.
Following his victory over the Australian number one, Norrie will advance to face French player Arthur Fils in the round of 16 on Monday, August 10.
