Dominican Republic basketball center Angel Delgado will have his contract covered by FIBA insurance after suffering a foot injury during World Cup qualifying play.
The financial protection guarantees that the 31-year-old athlete will receive his salary despite losing his club deal abroad. Delgado suffered a foot fissure while representing his country during the qualifying windows for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
As a direct result of the injury, Delgado's employment relationship with Russian professional club BC UNICS was terminated on September 7, 2026. The Russian team confirmed in a post published on Instagram that the contract was brought to an end by mutual consent.
Reports leaked regarding the agreement indicate that Delgado's contract was valued at over 1 million dollars. Under global basketball regulations, that salary will now be covered by basketball's international governing body, the International Basketball Federation, known as FIBA, through its mandatory player protection insurance policy once standard protocols are completed.
FIBA insurance evaluation process
To initiate the financial coverage process, the Dominican Basketball Federation, known as Fedombal, submits the player's contract documentation directly to FIBA. Fedombal president Rafael Uribe explained that the international federation provides the insurance policy specifically to safeguard players participating in international windows.
The situation has now entered a formal medical investigation phase. Uribe stated that after doctors establish the official medical prognosis, Fedombal submits Delgado's complete medical file to FIBA. Medical experts and insurance evaluators with the international body then review the case to determine the precise compensation amount corresponding to the athlete.
Delgado is currently in the Dominican Republic as the administrative and medical review progresses. Uribe noted that FIBA insurance coverage has previously been utilized for other Dominican national team players under similar circumstances, including center Eloy Vargas and forward Justin Minaya.
Mandatory insurance for national team players
Prior to the adoption of the current international calendar, individual national federations were required to secure insurance policies for their own players. However, FIBA took over the responsibility of guaranteeing player contracts after approving a restructured World Cup qualification format in 2015.
The updated qualification framework featured its initial competitive windows in 2017 ahead of the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup. Under FIBA rules, mandatory insurance applies to every participating athlete. Uribe emphasized that players are strictly prohibited from taking part in national team training sessions unless their insurance coverage is fully in place.
The policy structure also includes specific guidelines for National Basketball Association players, who are allocated designated dates to train and wear their national team jerseys. FIBA established these measures to ensure that all athletes, whether competing in the NBA or in professional leagues overseas, receive equal contract protection while representing their nations.
For federations such as Fedombal, obtaining individual insurance policies for elite NBA talent can be financially prohibitive. Uribe highlighted that Dominican NBA star Karl-Anthony Towns has a guaranteed salary of 57,078,728 dollars for the current year, illustrating the high cost of insurance premiums for top-tier professional contracts.
Player recovery and future career prospects
Fedombal president Uribe expressed deep regret over Delgado's injury while commending the veteran center for his unwavering commitment to the national team. He emphasized that Delgado has consistently made himself available to represent the Dominican Republic in international tournaments.
Delgado possesses extensive experience across international basketball, including a brief stint in the NBA with the Los Angeles Clippers. Over the past four seasons, he has played professionally in Turkey, following earlier playing spells in the top domestic divisions of Israel and Spain.
Members of the Fedombal medical team are currently monitoring the health and recovery process of the 31-year-old center. Uribe indicated that once Delgado completes his rehabilitation, the Dominican big man could return to competing in European basketball leagues.
