Olympiacos has officially appointed Antonio Cordón as sporting director, bringing the Spanish administrator back to the Greek club for a second stint.
The Piraeus-based club confirmed the agreement in an official statement, noting that Cordón will immediately assume responsibility for football operations at the team.
Cordón played a major role in finalizing the deal for the club's new head coach, Imanol Alguacil, who has taken charge of the first team.
The appointment reunites Cordón with Greek football following an earlier spell in Piraeus. Cordón is a veteran Spanish football executive who has previously held senior directorial roles at clubs including Villarreal, Monaco, and Real Betis, as well as overseeing international operations for the Ecuador national team.
Return to Piraeus
This move marks a second tenure at Olympiacos for Cordón. He previously served as the club's sporting director during the first half of the 2023-24 season.
During his initial spell in Greece, Cordón worked alongside head coach Diego Martínez, who managed the team during that period. Martínez had arrived at Olympiacos after a successful stint managing Spanish club Granada.
In its official announcement, Olympiacos FC stated that it had formally begun its cooperation with Cordón and confirmed that he would take up his duties as sporting director of the club.
New manager deal
Cordón played a central role in bringing in Alguacil, who has signed a 2-plus-1 year contract with Olympiacos. Alguacil previously managed Spanish club Real Sociedad before moving to Greece.
Alguacil has already taken charge of training, with Olympiacos releasing video footage of his first session with the squad. His arrival brings wider changes to the club's technical staff as the backroom team is restructured.
The managerial change follows the exit of former head coach José Luis Mendilibar. Striker Youssef El-Arabi publicly expressed surprise at Mendilibar's departure while noting that forward Ayoub El Kaabi would remain an important player for the side.
Reshaping football operations
With Cordón leading football management once again, Olympiacos aims to build long-term stability across its sporting department. The club, based at the Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus, is Greece's most successful football institution and a regular competitor in European football.
Olympiacos is preparing for its upcoming campaign in Super League Greece, where match atmospheres remain fierce. Head coach Enzo Maresca recently described the derby between Olympiacos and Panathinaikos as the most intense rivalry match he had ever experienced.
