Greek swimmer Apostolos Siskos broke the national record in the 200m backstroke at the European Aquatics Championships in Paris on Tuesday. The 21-year-old athlete clocked a time of 1:54.06 in his semifinal heat to secure a place in the final.
Siskos finished first in his heat and third overall across the semifinal round to earn direct qualification. His time lowered his own previous Greek record of 1:54.12, which he set on May 8, 2026.
Semifinal splits and final schedule
The swimmer led his heat from the start, recording split times of 26.85 at 50 meters, 55.87 at 100 meters, and 1:25.07 at 150 meters. His mother celebrated emotionally in the stands as he completed the record-breaking swim.
Siskos will compete in the 200m backstroke final on Wednesday, August 12, at 19:40.
