China's Ashun Wu took a one-shot lead at the Omega European Masters in Crans Montana after shooting a first-round 63 on Thursday.
England's Todd Clements sits just one stroke behind the leader after carding a six-under-par 64, placing him in a five-way tie for second position in the Swiss Alps.
Wu produced an error-free opening display at the high-altitude tournament, registering seven birdies and avoiding a single bogey throughout his round. The Chinese golfer is seeking his sixth career victory on the DP World Tour.
The DP World Tour, formerly known as the European Tour, is the premier professional golf circuit in Europe. Wu turned professional in 2007 and previously became the first golfer from China to win a European Tour event on European soil, establishing himself among his country's most successful international players.
Clements posted a dynamic round of his own to keep pressure on the leader. The Englishman recorded an eagle and six birdies alongside two bogeys to build his six-under total score.
Clements achieved his breakthrough victory on the DP World Tour at the Czech Masters in 2023. The Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club, located in the Valais canton of Switzerland, sits at an elevation of nearly 5,000 feet above sea level. At this high altitude, the thin mountain air causes golf balls to travel further than at sea level, presenting competitors with narrow tree-lined fairways and complex distance calculations.
Second Place Contenders
Joining Clements in second place on six-under par are Germany's Nicolai von Dellingshausen, India's Shubhankar Sharma, Spain's Angel Ahora, and South Africa's Lawrence Thriston.
Sharma won the European Tour Rookie of the Year award in 2018 after winning two tour events in a single season, while Thriston has established himself as one of the tour's most consistent winners in recent years.
England's Harry Hall and Jack Yule also remain in strong contention heading into the weekend. Both players posted rounds of 65 to sit two shots off the lead, with Yule delivering an eye-catching performance that featured five birdies on the back nine.
Hall plays predominantly on the PGA Tour in the United States, bringing valuable international experience back to the European stage as he pursues a top finish in Switzerland.
English Contingent and Leaderboard
Further down the leaderboard, a strong group of English players positioned themselves within touching distance of the frontrunners. Dan Bradbury, Paul Casey, and Joshua Berry concluded the opening day tied for 25th place after each posting a three-under-par 67.
Casey is a veteran of international golf with 15 DP World Tour victories and five Ryder Cup appearances for Europe to his name. Meanwhile, fellow countrymen Matt Wallace and Marco Penge ended the day one stroke further back after submitting scores of two-under-par 68.
Wallace has captured four titles on the European circuit and has also competed extensively across North America on the PGA Tour.
Danish twin brothers Rasmus Højgaard and Nicolai Højgaard both opened their tournament with scores of 68. Rasmus ended the day five shots off the lead in 42nd place following a challenging start to the week, matching the exact score recorded by his brother Nicolai. The Højgaard twins made history in 2021 by winning back-to-back DP World Tour events in consecutive weeks.
