Former Memphis Grizzlies player Brandon Clarke died from an accidental overdose of cocaine and heroin at his home in the San Fernando Valley on May 11, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Department. The department announced on Friday that the 29-year-old player died from the effects of the two drugs. Medical personnel found him unconscious in his bedroom around 5 p.m., and he was declared dead at 5:15 p.m.
Drug paraphernalia was found near his body, and initial investigations focused on a possible overdose, according to several reports. News outlet TMZ was the first to report the cause of death.
Clarke was selected in the 2019 NBA draft and played all seven seasons of his professional career with the Memphis Grizzlies, averaging 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. The day after his death, the Memphis Grizzlies released a statement stating they were deeply shocked by the tragic loss of Clarke. The team called him an exceptional teammate and an even better person whose impact on the organization and the Memphis community would be unforgettable, while expressing their deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
Prior Arrest in Arkansas
Less than six weeks before his death, Clarke was arrested in Arkansas for alleged possession of half a kilo of drugs. Deputies from the Cross County Sheriff's Office wrote in a probable cause affidavit that they found 235.6 grams of kratom in his vehicle after a traffic stop. Clarke told authorities during the stop that he believed the substance was legal, while the Mayo Clinic notes kratom can act as both a stimulant and a sedative.
Tribute From Fiancee
Days after his death, Clarke's fiancee, Amber Lorraine, remembered him in an emotional social media post as the most special person with a huge heart. She added that she only wanted to hold and kiss him and that the world was not the same without him.
