The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has confirmed it received a claim from Ukraine’s National Olympic Committee (NOC) seeking to overturn the International Olympic Committee’s decision to reinstate the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), according to Sport24.
CAS said the case is at its earliest procedural stage. The parties must first exchange written submissions, after which either a sole arbitrator or a panel of arbitrators will be appointed.
Ukraine’s NOC filed the appeal on July 29, arguing the IOC’s decision contradicts provisions of the Olympic Charter. The Ukrainian side contends the ROC’s reinstatement was premature and carried out without proper scrutiny.
On July 7, the IOC lifted its recommendations to international federations and sports event organisers to restrict Russian athletes’ participation, and temporarily restored the ROC’s status.
The IOC had suspended the ROC on October 12, 2023, after the Olympic councils of four new Russian regions were incorporated into the organisation.
