Former NFL practice squad player Damoun Patterson has been arrested in Florida on felony charges including armed burglary following an alleged home invasion.
The 31-year-old was taken into custody by the Daytona Beach Police Department and charged with armed burglary of a dwelling, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, grand theft of a motor vehicle and criminal mischief.
Jail booking records obtained by CBS 12, a television news station serving Florida, confirmed that Patterson remained in custody in Volusia County as of Monday afternoon following his arrest. Volusia County is located along Florida's Atlantic coast, roughly 50 miles northeast of Orlando.
Police traffic stop in Daytona Beach
According to a charging affidavit, law enforcement officers had issued a be-on-the-lookout alert for Patterson and a stolen vehicle connected to an alleged home invasion in Orlando. Such alerts are routinely broadcast to regional law enforcement agencies to help officers track down suspects across jurisdictional boundaries.
Daytona Beach officers located and pulled over a white Kia matching the description in the alert.
Bodycam footage released of the traffic stop showed an officer drawing his weapon and ordering Patterson out of the car. The officer said: "You be cool with me, we'll be cool with you."
During the arrest, an officer pointed out a knife inside the vehicle before Patterson began talking to police about his past football career.
Exchange over football career
He claimed that the Pittsburgh Steelers had once clocked him running 23 mph and mentioned that he had broken "both toes."
"You played on the Steelers?" an officer asked, to which Patterson replied that the team had hosted him for a workout, adding that he wanted them to know they should have drafted him.
Officers then informed Patterson that the Kia he was driving was stolen and that he was going to jail, warning him that he would likely face further inquiries from police.
College and NFL career history
Patterson is an Orlando native who played college football at Utah State University, Highland Community College and Youngstown State University before attempting to break into the National Football League.
He later spent time on offseason rosters and practice squads with the New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, though he never appeared in a regular-season NFL game. NFL practice squads allow teams to maintain up to 16 developmental players who train alongside the main squad but are not eligible to play in regular-season games unless activated to the main roster.
The Daily Mail has reached out to the Orlando Police Department for comment on the investigation.
