Daniel Maldini, the son of AC Milan and Italy legend Paolo Maldini, was rushed to hospital after being involved in a car crash, just hours after scoring the winning goal in a Serie A match.

Maldini, 24, netted a decisive penalty on Saturday night as Cagliari beat Atalanta 2-1.

The attacking midfielder was then involved in a collision while driving his Porsche Carrera at around 5:15am on Sunday morning.

Six people were said to be involved in the crash, which involved two vehicles. Three ambulances and a medical car were dispatched to the scene, and those six people are understood to have suffered minor injuries.

Five of those affected were taken to hospital, including Maldini, who was reportedly evaluated at Milan's Fatebenefratelli facility. The other individual involved was treated at the scene.

Ironic Winner Against His Parent Club

The incident came soon after Maldini enjoyed a memorable evening on Saturday. Not only did he score the winner from the spot, but the midfielder is on loan at Cagliari from Atalanta, the very club he scored against, after being deemed surplus to requirements there.

That came just hours after he scored the winning goal as Cagliari beat Atalanta on Saturday

It was Maldini's second goal in just four league games this season, with Cagliari currently sitting fourth in Serie A following an extremely positive start.

A Storied Footballing Family

Maldini's father Paolo is widely regarded as one of Italy's greatest footballers of all time, having spent his entire career representing only AC Milan and the Italy national team. His late grandfather Cesare also earned legendary status at the San Siro before enjoying a managerial career that included spells in charge of his former club and the Italy national side.

Daniel Maldini came through the ranks at AC Milan during a period when his father served as the club's technical director, and has also represented clubs including Monza and Lazio. He left Milan in 2024 in search of more regular first-team football, spending a year at Monza before moving on to Atalanta.

What Comes Next

Maldini has won six caps for Italy and could be back in action next Saturday when Cagliari travel to Udinese.
