Davis Riley shot a seven-under 63 on Saturday to take a one-shot lead into the final round of the Rocket Classic at Detroit Golf Club in Michigan. Riley reached 15 under par after closing his third round with consecutive birdies, making a 54-foot putt followed by a 10-foot putt on the final hole.
Riley pulled into a first-place tie with Michael Brennan before taking sole possession of the lead. Brennan posted a strong third round with seven birdies, but missed a nine-foot putt to bogey the 18th hole and lost his share of the lead.
Rasmus Hojgaard, Chris Kirk, Rickie Fowler, and Cameron Young sit three shots back going into Sunday's final round. Xander Schauffele is in a group another stroke back.
FedEx Cup Playoff Race
Riley is aiming for his third career PGA Tour win and his first victory since the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge as he tries to reach the postseason. He is currently No 146 in the FedEx Cup standings after missing 10 cuts this season, including last week's 3M Open.
The Rocket Classic and next week's Wyndham Championship are the last two tournaments left before the top 70 players advance to the playoffs. Riley previously led after three rounds at the season-opening Sony Open before closing with a 71 to finish tied for sixth.
"There's been a lot of ups and downs," he said. "I'm just excited that I've started to put the things together and have a chance."
Course Record Lows in Detroit
Rasmus Hojgaard became the third player in as many days to match the course record with a 61 on Saturday, temporarily taking the lead before Riley's late birdies. Hojgaard is vying for his first PGA Tour win after missing the cut in his last three starts and barely making the weekend at 3 under in Detroit.
First-round leader Peter Malnati opened with a 61 before plummeting to 4 under with rounds of 71 and 74. World No 3 Cameron Young matched the 61 mark on Friday to share the halfway lead, but carded a 68 on Saturday to drop three shots back.
