Tennis player Demi Schuurs collided with a ball girl on No 3 court during a Wimbledon quarter-final match, causing concern for both individuals. Schuurs and her partner Ellen Perez were playing Shuko Aoyama and En-shou Laing in the women's doubles tournament when the incident happened with the first set tied at 3-3.
Schuurs ran to the back of the court to retrieve a forehand shot and found the ball girl in her path. Although the ball girl was in the correct position, Schuurs clattered into her while trying to play the shot. The duo tumbled to the ground on the concrete surface at the back of the court.
Schuurs appeared to come out worse from the fall and required a medical time-out in the middle of the game. A physio checked her arms and knees on the court before play resumed.
Despite losing the point, Schuurs gave the ball girl a high five after receiving treatment and was able to continue playing.
Match outcome and Grand Slam record
Schuurs and Perez ultimately lost the match 6-4, 6-4 to suffer elimination from the tournament. The defeat meant Schuurs fell at the quarter-final stage at Wimbledon once again, with her best Grand Slam finish remaining a semi-final appearance at the 2021 Australian Open.
