FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa will remain at the club following the closure of the transfer window across Europe's top five leagues, delivering major relief to Portuguese club management and head coach Francesco Farioli.
European heavyweights Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus, and Bayern Munich had all made the Porto captain a transfer priority in recent months. However, none of the interested clubs moved forward with a formal bid after Porto's sporting administration, led by club president André Villas-Boas, refused to lower their demand for his 60 million euro release clause.
Farioli had made numerous comments regarding the transfer interest surrounding his star goalkeeper throughout the summer market. On one occasion, the Italian manager joked that local authorities should close the airports, adding that he hoped Costa would remain with the squad for the entire season.
Release clause blocks summer moves
The 26-year-old goalkeeper had initially considered the possibility of leaving his boyhood club following an impressive performance for the Portugal national team at the World Cup. However, as the transfer window progressed, none of the incoming proposals met the required expectations or financial conditions set by Porto.
Farioli can now breathe a sigh of relief as he retains one of the squad's most influential and essential figures for the upcoming campaign. Costa has maintained an outstanding defensive record at the start of the current season, having not conceded a single goal so far.
Career milestones at FC Porto
Costa recently reached a major personal milestone by completing his 250th official appearance in an FC Porto jersey. Having progressed through virtually every level of the club's youth academy, he established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper during the 2020/2021 season under former head coach Sérgio Conceição.
Since taking over the starting role, the Porto captain has established himself among Europe's top goalkeepers. Under contract at the Estádio do Dragão until 2030, Costa has already won three Portuguese league titles, three Portuguese Cups, and three Super Cups with the Dragons.
With fellow goalkeeper Cláudio Ramos sidelined due to injury, Costa continues to lead the team from the back as Porto push forward in domestic and European competition.
