Dundee defeated Aberdeen 2-0 at Dens Park as Joe Westley and Joe Bevan scored in a convincing Scottish Premiership victory. The Dark Blues produced an impressive performance in their first home league match of the season to earn all three points.
Aberdeen suffered a severe defensive collapse throughout the match. Manager Stephen Robinson previously built a reputation for making his teams hard to beat during his time at St Mirren. That success led the Aberdeen hierarchy to appoint him midway through last season to bring him to the Granite City.
The Dons entered the fixture with encouraging results after recording four wins from four matches in the Premier Sports Cup group stage. They followed that run with a dramatic win over Hearts to open the new league campaign last weekend. However, Aberdeen struggled from start to finish at Dens Park as the home side controlled the game.
Dundee Squad Rebuilding and Early Season Form
Dundee manager Steven Pressley faced criticism during the week for insisting on playing down expectations for the season. Pressley had reason to be pleased with his side's performance after they competed against Celtic on Monday night despite coming away with nothing. Dundee looked determined to secure three points in their home league debut.
Dens Park underwent significant squad changes during the summer transfer window after the core of the team departed. Replacing key players Luke Graham, Billy Koumetio, and Cam Congreve presented a difficult challenge. However, Pressley earned the right to rebuild the squad after winning over initial doubts from Dundee supporters last season.
Dundee displayed enough quality throughout the team to suggest they can target a finish in the top six. Defender Ryan Astley prevented Aberdeen striker Kevin Nisbet from creating chances throughout the afternoon. In midfield, Ethan Hamilton and new signing Ryan Finnigan controlled play with ease.
Former Burnley winger Joe Bevan delivered an outstanding performance on the right wing against Aberdeen defender Nesta Guinness-Walker. Bevan repeatedly threatened the Aberdeen defence whenever he received the ball on the flank.

Bevan created his first major opening after seven minutes of play. Aberdeen defender Dan Happe inexplicably gave away possession to the 22-year-old winger on the edge of his own penalty box, but Bevan dragged his shot wide of the target.
Aberdeen failed to heed the early warning and fell behind ninety seconds later in the ninth minute. Guinness-Walker gave Bevan ample space to cut inside from the right wing and locate Joe Westley in the center. Westley made a sharp movement to steal a yard before expertly volleying the ball into the net.
Aberdeen defenders failed to mark Westley closely during the opening goal sequence. Immediately after the restart, Bevan evaded a challenge from Guinness-Walker once again before firing high and wide from the angle of the penalty box.
Dundee missed an opportunity to extend their lead in the twentieth minute. The Aberdeen defence stood still eighteen yards from their own goal, allowing Westley to steal the ball. However, Westley could not beat Aberdeen goalkeeper Marius Muller with his effort.
Aberdeen Midfield Issues and First Half Action
Aberdeen's defensive line struggled throughout the first half and received little support from the players positioned ahead of them. Central midfielders Alexander Briedl and Afeez Aremu appeared confused in the middle of the pitch, leaving large gaps of space behind them for Dundee to exploit repeatedly.
Winger Tony Yogane endured a difficult outing on his return to face his former club. Yogane failed to offer defensive support to Guinness-Walker on the left side during the first half. Due to a noticeable lack of effort, Aberdeen substituted Yogane at the half-time break.
Aberdeen created their best opportunity of the first half with ten minutes remaining before the interval. Dan Happe rose high at the back post to connect with a corner kick delivered by Stuart Armstrong. Dundee goalkeeper Owen Goodman tipped the header onto the crossbar before Hamilton cleared the ball from close range.
Bevan created another opportunity for Dundee shortly before half-time by outrunning Guinness-Walker down the wing. Bevan advanced toward the goal and struck a low shot with the outside of his left boot that failed to test Muller.
Manager Yellow Card and Second Half Goal
Aberdeen manager Stephen Robinson showed clear anger on the sidelines as his team struggled to establish control. Robinson received a yellow card from the referee for his reaction after Aberdeen defender Lewis Mayo was booked.
Aberdeen began the second period with better intensity and briefly built momentum. However, the visitors conceded a second goal when a hopeful ball from Charlie Reilly on the left wing travelled all the way across the penalty area. Bevan received the pass on the far side of the box and rifled his shot into the top corner.
Aberdeen almost responded shortly after the second goal. Toyosi Olusanya beat Dundee defender Drey Wright on the byeline and delivered a cutback pass for Chris Cadden. Cadden struck the ball on the slide, but his shot rebounded off the upright.
Late Opportunities and Historical Milestone
Dundee created another opening when Aberdeen substitute defender Jack Milne allowed a long ball to drop over his head. Dundee forward Ashley Hay brought the ball under control and struck a strong effort that drew a fine save from Muller.
Goodman kept Aberdeen from scoring later in the half by making a key save. The Dundee goalkeeper extended his boot to stop a downward header from Happe as Aberdeen searched for a way back into the match.
Moroccan striker Ayoub Mouloua entered the match as a half-time substitute and showed determination to create opportunities for Aberdeen. The Dons also set a club record during the match as 15-year-old Andrew Fasanya came off the bench to become Aberdeen's youngest-ever player to feature in a league fixture.
