Eintracht Frankfurt have signed Nigerian midfielder Raphael Onyedika from Belgian club Club Brugge, with the 25-year-old putting pen to a contract running until 2031.
Reports put the transfer fee at around 9 million euros, less than half of Onyedika's estimated market value. The move follows years of interest from other clubs, including Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and, more intensely, AC Milan.
Eintracht sporting director Markus Krösche first tried to sign Onyedika last summer and had nearly convinced the player to make the move, but the club could not or would not meet Club Brugge's asking price at the time. Onyedika stayed in Belgium, and Krösche kept tracking him. This summer, with only one year left on Onyedika's contract in Bruges, Eintracht held a stronger negotiating position.
From the streets of Nigeria to Denmark
Onyedika's path to professional football began in Shagamu, a Nigerian city of about 230,000 people that is home to the FC Ebedei academy, widely regarded as the country's best football academy. The academy specializes in taking young people off the streets, spotting talent early and training them at modern facilities.
Before joining the academy, Onyedika spent entire days playing football on the street, usually barefoot, he once told Belgian media. He said his family had very little, and that he and his siblings often had to beg just to afford dinner. FC Ebedei discovered him at age 15.
The academy's modern facilities exist because of backing from FC Midtjylland, the Danish club best known in Frankfurt through former player Rasmus Kristensen. Midtjylland has financially supported FC Ebedei for many years and regularly transfers young Nigerian players to Scandinavia. Six of the academy's players currently sit on Midtjylland's under-19 squad, and five more are with the first team.
Paul Onuachu, now Trabzonspor's top scorer with 211 career goals at age 32, made that same move to Midtjylland 14 years ago, becoming one of the first Nigerian players to do so. Onyedika followed his example in 2019 at age 18. Onuachu, who barely featured in a recent friendly between Trabzonspor and Eintracht Frankfurt, plays alongside Onyedika for the Nigerian national team.
Onyedika described the move to Denmark as quite difficult, citing a new country, new culture and different climate, but said the many fellow Nigerians there helped him settle in. Like other young Nigerian players, he lived with a host family. He said things have gone well since.
Breakthrough at Midtjylland and Brugge
At Midtjylland, Onyedika progressed through the under-19 team to the first team, went on a brief loan to second-division club Fredericia, returned, and was later sold to Club Brugge for close to 10 million euros. He became a key player for the Belgian club, impressing in the league and in European competition.
Last season, playing for Champions League participant Club Brugge, Onyedika operated as a defensive midfielder, both breaking up opposition play and directing his team's own. He posted a 90 percent pass completion rate and averaged 73 touches per game, along with a 56 percent duel win rate, though his form dipped toward the end of the season.
Competition for a starting role at Eintracht
At Eintracht Frankfurt, Onyedika will compete for a starting spot with Noel Aseko, Hugo Larsson and Oscar Höjlund, and possibly Love Arrhov. Sporting director Timmo Hardung said the club plans to use him as a regular starter, describing him as an anchor player.
Standing 1.84 meters tall, Onyedika is known for his robustness, athleticism and anticipation, and for his ability to read the game and shift it with short passes, though he contributes less going forward. His profile fits what Eintracht Frankfurt has been seeking for years: a defensive midfielder who respects the team's defensive structure and rarely abandons his position.
