Manchester City have agreed a £125 million deadline-day deal to sign Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, securing the Premier League champion's top summer transfer target for a joint-record British fee.
The fixed £125m fee for the 25-year-old Argentinian contains no add-ons and equals the British transfer record set when Liverpool signed Alexander Isak from Newcastle United last summer. Fernandez was top target for Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca during this transfer window.
However, Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso and senior officials at Stamford Bridge were left seething after French club AS Monaco dramatically pulled the plug on an agreement for replacement midfielder Lamine Camara as the 11pm deadline approached.
Chelsea reached an agreement with Manchester City that took their total summer transfer spending toward the £500m mark, a figure club sources noted represents a British record. Yet the West London club sanctioned the departure without securing their own replacement at the ready.
Monaco collapse Camara transfer
With less than two hours remaining on deadline day, Chelsea believed they had secured Camara from Monaco after agreeing a £47m deal. Chelsea spent deadline day chasing the Senegal international, seeing two bids worth £38.5m and £42.9m turned down earlier in the day before having their third offer accepted.
In a dramatic twist as the 11pm deadline neared, Monaco went back on their word. Chelsea sources stated that the two clubs had reached a full, written, club-to-club agreement for Camara to join the Premier League side.
Yet when Monaco renegotiated their transfer of United States forward Folarin Balogun to Everton, Monaco informed Chelsea that the deal for Camara was being withdrawn. Insiders at Stamford Bridge described the move as a deeply unprofessional way for another club to conduct business.
The sudden withdrawal left Chelsea without midfield cover for Fernandez. Blues sources added they had the opportunity to stop Fernandez from joining Manchester City after learning of Monaco's U-turn, but gave their word to their Premier League counterparts and, unlike Monaco, honoured it.
In a statement released around the same time as the news broke, Fernandez said to his former fans: "Chelsea will always have a place in my thoughts and, above all, in my heart. But I also understand how football works. I know how passionate you are, because I am the same. And if I were in your position, I would probably be thinking the same way."
Summer deadline and Maresca link
Manchester City leaving their club-to-club negotiations until the final two days of the transfer window left Chelsea with limited time to secure their own signing. Central to Chelsea agreeing to the deal with City was Fernandez's relationship with Maresca, with both eager to work together again.
Fernandez was known to have been keen to leave Stamford Bridge, having flirted with the idea before the previous season had even finished. Chelsea fans may be glad that what turned into an exhausting saga is finally coming to an end.
Chelsea initially attempted to accelerate a conclusion by creating their own deadline for bids by Friday, August 14 at 5pm. That was for a £120m transfer, with terms communicated to Premier League counterparts via Fernandez's camp, led by Javier Pastore.
Chelsea hoped the deadline would give them ample time to replace their 2022 World Cup-winning midfielder. However, Manchester City did not play along with Chelsea's timeline. No offer was submitted, and Blues insiders claimed they expected Fernandez to stay with them for the entirety of 2026-27.
Fernandez was even handed the captain's armband when he appeared as a substitute in Chelsea's final friendly at home to Spanish club Real Sociedad, receiving a mixed reception inside Stamford Bridge.
Fulham booing and squad exclusion
Fernandez appeared in Chelsea's Premier League opener at Fulham as a substitute. While home fans inside Craven Cottage booed him after Argentina's behaviour at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the away end welcomed him warmly, with Chelsea supporters chanting his name.
Fernandez continued to train with his team-mates in Alonso's main squad rather than the second group including Liam Delap and Nicolas Jackson, but then disappeared from matchday selections.
Following talks with Alonso, Fernandez was not involved in Chelsea's Carabao Cup win over Luton Town or their Premier League victory against Brighton and Hove Albion. Alonso insisted publicly it was his decision after speaking with the player, but added he selected a squad that had the "desire to play."
Maresca history and midfield options
Maresca enjoyed a strong relationship with Fernandez at Chelsea, where the midfielder often wore the captain's armband in the absence of skipper Reece James. Maresca also handed him that armband barely a month after the Argentinian was accused of singing a racist song following his country's 2024 Copa America triumph, during Chelsea's Premier League opener at home to Manchester City.
When Maresca eventually exited Chelsea after speaking with Manchester City about succeeding Pep Guardiola, Fernandez was among those who spoke up, suggesting the departure "hurt" the team. The Blues ended up finishing 10th in that season, leaving them with no European football under Alonso for this term.
With no Fernandez or Camara, and with Dario Essugo joining French club Strasbourg on loan, Chelsea's senior midfield options are Moises Caicedo, Reece James, Romeo Lavia, Valentin Barco and Jordan Henderson. Malo Gusto can also be used centrally if required.
While Fernandez developed a helpful habit of scoring important goals, Alonso retains an impressive attack after signing Morgan Rogers for £117m this summer to form a front three with Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro.
