FC Barcelona beat FC Basel 5-2 in pre-season friendly

FC Barcelona beat Swiss side FC Basel 5-2 in a pre-season friendly in Switzerland on Sunday after 18-year-old substitute Jesse Bisiwu scored two late goals.

The victory comes as Barcelona prepare for a delayed start to their domestic season, with head coach Hansi Flick giving several summer arrivals their first action for the Spanish club ahead of their competitive campaign.

New signings Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi both started in attack for Barcelona. Gordon, the English forward, picked out a fourth-minute cross that failed to reach a teammate in the penalty area, before German international Adeyemi delivered a dangerous ball two minutes later.

Adeyemi opened the scoring in the 34th minute, beating a defender before firing a powerful left-footed strike past the Basel goalkeeper. The winger joined Barcelona after previously playing for German Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund.

Basel responded before the interval when youngster Jean Doucuore scored an equalizer in the 43rd minute, leaving the sides tied at 1-1 at half-time.

Second half goal surge

Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny entered the match at the break in place of Joan Garcia. Following the departure of striker Robert Lewandowski from Barcelona during the summer transfer window, Szczęsny remains the team's key Polish player.

Barcelona quickly regained the lead early in the second half when Hamza Abdelkarim scored in the 49th minute to make it 2-1. Spanish winger Lamine Yamal extended the advantage in the 81st minute, scoring Barcelona's third goal of the afternoon.

Basel pulled a goal back three minutes later when Kazeem Olaigbe beat Szczęsny to reduce the deficit to 3-2. However, Bisiwu, who was signed from Belgian club Club Brugge, sealed the win with a rapid late double to complete the 5-2 scoreline.

Late start to La Liga campaign

Barcelona will start their La Liga campaign a week later than scheduled due to the participation of several squad members in the decisive matches of the World Cup. Flick's side will play one final pre-season friendly against Egyptian club Al Ahly before opening their league fixtures against Elche on 23 August.
