FIFA has launched disciplinary proceedings against Argentina over a Falklands banner displayed by players after their match, along with several other alleged breaches including discrimination, racist abuse and objects thrown by supporters.
Two Argentina players, Leandro Paredes and Nahuel Molina, along with Argentina coach Roberto Ayala, have separately had proceedings opened against them over allegations of assault following scenes that marred the World Cup final against Spain.
A number of Argentina's players, including Manchester United's Lisandro Martinez and Tottenham's Cristian Romero, lifted a banner touting their country's claim to the Falkland Islands after their World Cup semi-final win over England. It read 'Las Malvinas son Argentinas,' using the country's term for the islands.
The banner triggered a backlash in the UK, with former Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer supporting calls for FIFA to open an investigation made by Business Secretary Peter Kyle at the time. FIFA's rules forbid political messaging at the World Cup, though the organization has previously not acted on continued references to the 1982 conflict in a song sung by Argentina's players and posted on social media by the country's association throughout the tournament.
A FIFA statement said proceedings were opened in light of discriminatory chants and gestures, late kick-offs, failure to comply with match and security protocols, the display of inappropriate messages by the team and spectators, and the throwing of objects by spectators during several Argentina matches at the World Cup.
Post-final brawl
Several Argentina players were involved in clashes with Spain's players immediately after the final whistle of the World Cup final. Spain captain Rodri was struck by Molina as he went to celebrate with his team-mates, before Dani Olmo was punched by coach Ayala.
Argentina midfielder Paredes grabbed Eric Garcia by the neck and, along with team-mate Thiago Almada, threw unused Spanish substitute Gavi to the floor.
Paredes faces three counts of assault, Molina faces two counts, one completed and one attempted, and Ayala faces one count. Paredes, Molina, Ayala, Thiago Almada and Spain's Gavi have also been charged with unsporting behavior over the post-match brawl.
FIFA said that in accordance with its Disciplinary Code, the respondents have now been given the opportunity to present their position, after which a decision will be issued by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee in due course.
