From illusion to fiasco: Colo Colo is beaten and says goodbye to the Copa Sudamericana

In Porto Alegre, the Cacique opened the account early and led 3-0 in the series against Internacional, but everything fell apart. He failed to defend and ended up losing (4-1, 4-3 in total), being eliminated in the round of 16.

The Colo Colo cup illusion ended in the worst possible way. He arrived with a 3-0 series lead against Internacional, with the first option to reach the quarter-finals of the Copa Sudamericana. However, everything that looked encouraging turned into a blow to the hubris of the albos as they came from behind. The momentum of the Brazilians depicted the defensive fragility of the Cacique and ended up winning 4-1, eliminating the leader of the National Tournament. A very bitter goodbye.

The Cacique arrived in Brazil with a 2-0 lead, obtained last week at the Monumental, but with an important defeat: Caesar Fuentes. The old Catholic was torn, which presented Gustavo Quinteros for forced rearmament. The question was whether he changed from man to man or made more edits. Finally, the coach decided not to touch the base of his structure and to directly replace Vicente Pizarro, to accompany Pavez in the midfield.

The albos got off to a good start. So much so that in 12 minutes they found themselves with a penalty in favor, after an offense by goalkeeper Daniel at Lucero (taking advantage of a local defensive failure). Despite the doubts generated by the action, it was not examined in the VAR. Gabriel Costa executes and converts. Colo Colo was well placed and didn’t suffer too much on the field. And he had one more goal in front. But in the blink of an eye, the panorama changed for the Chilean team.

Suddenly, in less than five minutes, Inter reversed the deal, taking advantage of the defensive cracks that were emerging in the Cacique, especially in the center of the defense. First, at minute 29, Alan Patrick equalized with a low shot, after a poor dismissal from Zaldivia. And then, at minute 32, Edenilson made it 2-1, appearing free in the box. A red burst reduced the distances. All the tranquility that Colo Colo exuded at the start of the duel has faded.

The speed on the bands applied by the gaúchos (the amplitude of Bustos and Moisés, their wings) was synonymous with latent risk. On the other side, Los Blancos’ only shot on goal in the first half was the penalty kick taken by Costa.

Suffer

If Colo Colo wanted to get out of Beira-Rio, he had to know how to suffer. Internacional were one goal away from equalizing the series and, in this case, stretching the definition towards penalties (the double value of the away goal in Conmebol tournaments no longer runs). The second half was more or less predictable: the attacking locals and the visitor, entrenched.

In the 1960s, Brayan Cortés made a good save against a shot from Taison, which entered in the first half. With more momentum and verticality than lyricism, Mano Menezes’ team won the match on the Colocolino pitch. For Alba’s aspirations, Pablo Solari was not the clumsy who stood out in the first leg. While Juan Martín Lucero had to go to the sacrifice.

The licenses granted by Colo Colo in defense were deadly. The third goal came instantly after Cortés was saved. On a corner, Alemao is ahead of Vicente Pizarro, at the near post, and leaves the national goalkeeper without reaction. The gaúchos managed to tie the tie. Quinteros attempted to respond with changes, continuing to defend with five. It did not work. In the 74th minute, Pedro Henrique made it 4-1. The goal was reviewed in VAR, before a possible offside, but there was nothing illegal. The score conceded, the coach changed again, to be “more offensive”. I needed a goal for the penalty shootout. Nothing at all.

The white box mortgaged its cup aspirations and ended up tipping, as it had a rosier outlook. In short, they say goodbye to the Cup in the worst possible way and it remains an obligation to be champion of the local championship.

The winner of this key has an encouraging horizon. The box opens. He will go to the quarter-finals with the winner of the series between Deportivo Cali and Melgar. In the first leg, the Colombians and Peruvians had a goalless draw.
