Maresca: Mudrik is not playing at the moment, but that doesn’t mean he won’t play in the future

According to the coach, the Ukrainian winger is one of the players who devotes extra time to training

Head coach Chelsea Enzo Maresca commented on the situation with the lack of playing practice of his protégé, the Ukrainian winger Mikhail Mudrik.

“How will Mudrik develop with less playing time? Training. Training is the only way to improve players. We try to improve everyone every day, and some of them have extra training at the end. Misha is one of them. At the moment, he is not playing, but this does not mean that he will not play in the future.”

It was recently reported that Mudrik does not fit into the playing system of Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca. The Italian specialist made it clear to the winger that he will have to work hard if he expects to be a stable player in the starting lineup.

Interest in Mudryk is shown by Marseille, which is headed by Roberto De Zerbi, who previously worked with Mykhailo at Shakhtar. The most likely option is to loan Mudryk in the winter transfer window. Also, according to Spanish media, the Ukrainian could become part of a deal between Chelsea and Inter in a potential transfer of Argentine striker Lautaro Martinez.

Mudryk joined Chelsea in January 2023 and signed an eight-and-a-half-year contract. Chelsea and Shakhtar agreed on Mudryk’s transfer for €100 million. Last season, 23-year-old Mudryk played in 41 matches for the Blues in all competitions, scoring seven goals and providing two assists.

In the 2024/25 season that has just started, Mudryk only once appeared in the Chelsea starting lineup in an EPL match. In total, the Ukrainian played 4 matches (2 in the EPL, 2 in the Conference League qualification), without any scoring.

Chelsea are eighth in the Premier League with seven points after four rounds. The Blues will play West Ham in the next round on September 21.
