Diego Forlán was presented on Monday as interim coach of the Uruguay national team, signing a contract through March 2027. Forlán said he does not rule out calling up Luis Suárez, who had retired from the Celeste.
Forlán praised the Inter Miami forward and referenced comments Suárez made weeks before this year's World Cup, when the player said he would be available to represent the country again.
What Forlán said
Forlán said he had not known Suárez made that statement, but that he would be welcome if he did say it. He said he has enormous affection for Suárez and great confidence in him, adding that if Suárez is available, having a player with his goals and experience would make sense, asking why not, and saying more would be decided later.
Forlán's playing history
Forlán played 112 matches for Uruguay and won the 2011 Copa América. In 2010 he led Uruguay to fourth place at the World Cup in South Africa and was named the tournament's best player. Uruguay's rebuilding follows Marcelo Bielsa's exit as coach after the Celeste was eliminated in the group stage of the World Cup.
