George Russell became Lewis Hamilton’s third teammate ahead of him at the end of the season – after Jenson Button in 2011 and Nico Rosberg in 2016. After the season ended, the young Briton admitted that he hadn’t expected this at all in the spring .
George Russell: “If you said at the start of the season that I could be ahead of Lewis, I would be incredibly proud and happy, because if you finish ahead of Lewis Hamilton you become world champion 90% of the time.
Unfortunately our car was not very competitive this season, we had our own problems, but I have no doubt that if the team builds a car next year that can win the championship then Lewis will return to his usual level and win.
I’m incredibly proud of what we achieved in Brazil, where I took pole and we took the double, but I came into Formula 1 to be champion and we have a long way to go for that. As they say “you are only as good as your last race” and we didn’t do as well in Abu Dhabi.”
