Simon Rennie: Daniel wasn’t confident at first

Daniel Ricciardo race engineer Simon Rennie spoke on the Talking Bull podcast about how the Australian’s return to Formula 1 began after a year-long hiatus.

Simon Rennie: “It wasn’t as easy as it looks. I knew Daniel well, but immediately after returning he surprised me by the fact that he was totally unsure of himself and seemed devastated.

I saw that he doubted his abilities, was afraid that he would not be able to do it again, because after successful performances in our team, he spent a few seasons unsuccessfully.

We started with the simulator. I don’t know with what feeling he judged the first day we spent together, but even after that he didn’t seem quite sure to me. But Daniel returned to his room and could think about everything. Then we had a good day on the simulator, he controlled the car the way he wanted – at one point it was like flipping a toggle switch, and everything was fine.

Since then, his confidence has snowballed. By the end of that day or the next day, we felt, “Yeah, he’s back.” It was nice to have him with us again.”
