Galatasaray beat Fenerbahce 2-1 as derby ends in brawl

Galatasaray defeated fierce rivals Fenerbahce 2-1 in the Intercontinental Derby on Monday, but the match was marred by a violent post-game brawl.

Following the final whistle at RAMS Park in Istanbul, players and coaching staff from both sides clashed on the pitch, exchanging punches, slaps, and shoves in a widespread melee that forced security personnel to intervene.

Victor Osimhen scored twice in the first half to put Galatasaray in control of the eighth-round Turkish championship fixture, before Irfan Can Kahveci pulled a goal back for Fenerbahce after the interval with a spectacular bicycle kick.

Post-match brawl on the pitch

Archie Brown and Abdulkerim Bardakci were seen in direct physical confrontation moments after the referee blew for full time. The dispute rapidly escalated as numerous teammates, substitutes, and members of both technical coaching staffs entered the confrontation, which spread across a large section of the playing surface.

Security forces rushed onto the field to separate the opposing camps and restore order as tempers boiled over. The aggressive scenes followed a volatile encounter that had featured friction between the two sides from the opening seconds of play.

Animosity had surfaced almost immediately after kick-off, with tempers flaring after just 20 seconds when Galatasaray forward Lukaku pulled Bardakci of Fenerbahce. That incident triggered an early altercation between the players and drew furious appeals to the referee for a yellow card.

Turkish derbies are renowned for volatile atmospheres, and security stewards are routinely stationed around the perimeter of the pitch to prevent disorder from spilling out of hand.

Osimhen double seals derby victory

Galatasaray opened the scoring in the 29th minute through Osimhen. The Nigerian forward found space near the edge of the penalty box and finished cleanly to give the home supporters an early breakthrough.

Osimhen doubled the advantage two minutes before half-time. In the 43rd minute, the striker unleashed a superb strike from outside the area to leave Fenerbahce trailing 2-0 heading into the dressing rooms.

Fenerbahce rallied in the second half and cut the deficit in the 62nd minute, 17 minutes after the restart. Kahveci produced a stunning bicycle kick to beat the goalkeeper and give the league leaders a lifeline.

Galatasaray held off late pressure from the visitors to secure all three points, but the competitive tension on the pitch set the stage for the chaotic brawl that erupted moments after the final whistle.

Intercontinental Derby rivalry and standings

The rivalry between Galatasaray and Fenerbahce, known as the Intercontinental Derby, represents one of the most intense fixtures in world sport. The clash divides Istanbul along the Bosphorus strait, pitting Galatasaray from the European side against Fenerbahce from the Asian side.

RAMS Park, situated in the Seyrantepe district on the European side of Istanbul, has served as Galatasaray's home stadium since 2011. Both clubs have dominated Turkish football for more than a century, claiming the majority of domestic titles between them.

The derby win lifted Galatasaray to 16 points in the Turkish championship table, keeping the team in fifth position after eight rounds of matches. Despite suffering defeat on Monday, Fenerbahce remained at the top of the standings on 22 points, holding a two-point cushion over second-placed Amed.

Upcoming Turkish championship fixtures

Both clubs face a short turnaround before their next league assignments at the weekend. Galatasaray travel away to take on Konyaspor on Friday, October 30, with kick-off set for 14:00 Brasilia time at the Medas Konya Buyuksehir Stadyumu.

Fenerbahce return home to the Asian side of Istanbul on Saturday, October 31, hosting Goztepe at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium. That match will kick off at 13:00 Brasilia time as the league leaders look to maintain their advantage at the top of the table.
