Greece maintained 12th place in the UEFA country coefficient ranking after earning 400 points through one win and two draws on Thursday, August 20.
The results brought the Greek total to 42,012 points, keeping all five of the country's clubs active in European competition. However, Greece missed an opportunity to make a larger leap toward 11th-placed Czechia after a late comeback in Athens denied Panathinaikos a victory.
The strongest result of the evening came in Crete, where OFI defeated Bulgarian side CSKA Sofia 3-0 in Heraklion. The win gave OFI a commanding lead in their quest to reach the League Phase of the Europa League.
Panathinaikos appeared set to add a second Greek victory after taking a 2-0 lead against Czech opponents Hradec Kralove. The Czech side fought back in the closing minutes to extract a 2-2 draw, leaving qualification for the Conference League playoffs open heading into the return fixture.
PAOK also ended their match tied after recovering from a deficit against Norwegian team Brann at Toumba Stadium in Thessaloniki. PAOK conceded first before scoring late to draw 1-1, leaving their bid for the Conference League League Phase to be decided in Norway.
Battle with Czechia and Poland
Greece remains 12th in the standings with 42,012 points, while Czechia occupies 11th place with 44,325 points. Czechia added only 100 points to its total on Thursday following two defeats and the draw by Hradec Kralove.
Czech club Viktoria Plzen suffered a 3-0 loss away to Serbian side Red Star in the Europa League, while Jablonec fell 1-0 to Scottish team Rangers in the Conference League. Although the gap between Greece and Czechia narrowed, it remained wider than it would have been had Panathinaikos held their lead in their direct head-to-head match against Czech opposition.
Poland occupies 10th place in the UEFA ranking with 44,825 points and four of its five representatives remaining. Polish clubs achieved major wins as Jagiellonia beat Georgian club Iberia 4-0 and Lech Poznan defeated Swiss team Thun 7-0 to confirm their spots in the Europa League. However, following the earlier elimination of Katowice, Gornik Zabrze faces a risk of exit after a 3-2 home loss to French side Monaco, whereas Rakow kept their hopes alive with a 2-2 draw against Hajduk in Split.
UEFA coefficient standings
A central objective for Greece is to ensure all five of its representatives qualify for the League Phases of European competition. The second leg between Panathinaikos and Hradec in Czechia carries particular weight, as advancing would allow the Greek club to eliminate a team from a country positioned directly above Greece in the ranking.
The UEFA country coefficient standings following Thursday's fixtures are:
- 10. Poland: 44.825 (4/5 teams remaining)
- 11. Czechia: 44.325 (4/5 teams remaining)
- 12. Greece: 42.012 (5/5 teams remaining)
- 13. Denmark: 37.556 (4/4 teams remaining)
- 14. Norway: 35.412 (5/5 teams remaining)
