Greece lost 96-86 in overtime to Spain in their EuroBasket U16 opener in Oradea, Romania. National coach Vassilis Spanoulis was in attendance as the Greek team suffered a defeat to start the tournament.
After a slow start in the first quarter, Greece improved in the second and third quarters. The team built a 14-point lead at 51-37 in the 23rd minute of the game.
Spain reduced the gap as Greece ran out of strength, tying the score at 83-83 with 21.9 seconds left in regulation. In overtime, Spain built a lead with a 7-0 run to secure the victory.
The quarter scores were 19-23, 35-46, 61-64, 83-83 at the end of regulation time, and 96-86 in overtime. Greece will face Israel next on Saturday, August 8 at 13:00.
