Former world heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko has paid tribute to American actress Hayden Panettiere following her sudden death at age 36 in South Carolina.
Emergency services responded to a report of a person in cardiac arrest at an apartment in Greenville early on Sunday afternoon, August 16. Rescuers were unable to revive Panettiere, and a possible overdose has been cited as the cause of her cardiac arrest. Medical responders also found the drug Narcan at the residence.
Klitschko, 50, who shared his life with Panettiere for several years and has a daughter with her, expressed his grief in a statement shared on his Instagram account. He said their family was experiencing a period of profound shock and sorrow following the news.
The Ukrainian athlete stated that the announcement of her tragic death had plunged him into deep sadness, adding that she had departed far too early. He said that although they were no longer together, Panettiere remained an important part of his life as the mother of their daughter, Kaya.
Tribute to talent and personal struggles
Klitschko praised Panettiere for building an incredible career through her immense talent. He also referenced her struggle against the darker aspects of a highly demanding entertainment industry, describing the challenges she faced over her career.
