Justin Herbert admitted that proposing to singer Madison Beer was more nerve-racking than his first NFL start, as the newly engaged couple appeared together at Los Angeles Chargers training camp this week.
Herbert, 28, got down on one knee last week after dating Beer for roughly a year. When reporters asked Thursday whether he had been more nervous about the proposal or his debut start at age 22, he replied with a grin: "The proposal, for sure."
The engagement was not entirely a surprise to Herbert's teammates. Safety Derwin James Jr. told reporters the moment had been a long time coming. "He told me a long time ago he was going to do it," James said. "I was happy for him. It was fun to see."
Linebacker Daiyan Henley said he had seen it coming since at least Week 1 of the 2025 season. "I knew she was the one when Justin slid on the field against the Chiefs in Sao Paulo. It was her impact," Henley told Kay Adams. "I already knew. We're locker room guys. I made a joke one day, and he was like, 'Bro, I'm bending the knee.' I couldn't wait. He was absolutely ready. Love was in the air, in his eyes, in his heart."
Beer made a surprise appearance at training camp this week and was spotted embracing Herbert as he walked off the field at the end of the session.
The couple first appeared together last summer on a music video set. They publicly confirmed the relationship in Week 5, when they kissed before Herbert's game against the Washington Commanders. Herbert later starred in Beer's music video for "lovergirl," released in May as part of her album "locket deluxe."
Head coach Jim Harbaugh said he found out about the engagement after the fact. "We were all over that," he told reporters. "He kind of said it was going to happen this summer and, yeah, it's awesome. I feel great for him." His marriage advice: "Attack each day with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind together."
