Inter Milan beat Manchester City 3-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in a pre-season friendly in Hong Kong, handing Enzo Maresca a defeat in his first match as City manager.
The Asahi Super Dry Trophy was at stake when the match went to a shootout after 90 minutes of level play. City had taken the lead before Pavard equalised at the 20-minute mark.
City struggled badly in the shootout. Ait-Nouri fired over the bar with the first kick, Khusanov struck the post and Nico Gonzalez had his effort saved, leaving the side with no goals from their opening three attempts.
There were some moments to note: Donnarumma saved the effort from Frattesi, and Echeverri later gave City a brief flicker of hope by converting a panenka to make it 1-2. Lavelli, however, scored last to seal the win for Inter.
Inter were clinical overall, with Zielinski, Mosconi and Lavelli all converting their penalties to claim the Asahi Super Dry Trophy.
“The important thing in pre-season isn’t winning,” City said on their broadcast channel. Maresca could nonetheless draw encouragement from the performance, with McAidoo, Savinho and Semenyo standing out over the 90 minutes.
