Olympic champion Irina Rodnina has dismissed the competitive record of ice dancers Diana Davis and Gleb Smolkin, describing their Challenger series medals as unserious.

Rodnina, a three-time Olympic gold medallist in pair skating and a State Duma deputy, evaluated the duo during an interview with the Russian sports website Sport24. Davis is the daughter of Eteri Tutberidze, an honoured figure skating coach in Russia.
The lawmaker stated that while Davis and Smolkin frequently secure podium finishes at Challenger series events, the tournaments do not represent serious competition. Rodnina argued that success at that level does not establish a pair among the world's elite figure skaters.
To support her assessment, Rodnina pointed to the duo's performances at the Winter Olympic Games. She recalled that the pair finished in 14th place at the 2022 Games and reached only 13th place at the 2026 Games, adding that she considers a finish inside the top eight to be the benchmark of a normal result.
Trialeti Trophy Challenger Victory
Her critical comments followed a victory for Davis and Smolkin on October 2 at the Trialeti Trophy, a Challenger series event held in Georgia. The ice dance duo earned a combined total score of 208.67 points from the judging panel across their two programs to take the title.
The Challenger Series operates under the International Skating Union as a secondary tier of senior international competition. Sitting beneath the prestigious Grand Prix circuit, the series allows competitors to earn valuable world ranking points and achieve minimum technical scores required for major championships.
Davis and Smolkin previously competed for Russia, where they won silver medals as national vice-champions. In 2023, the partnership transferred their sporting allegiance to Georgia, representing the country on the international stage since that season.
Olympic Legacy and Elite Standards
Rodnina is widely regarded as one of the most successful competitors in the history of figure skating. She won three consecutive Olympic gold medals in pairs skating between 1972 and 1980, alongside ten consecutive world titles, before pursuing a career in politics as a federal deputy in the Russian parliament.
Her high expectations reflect her own dominance as well as the standards set by Davis's mother. Tutberidze has coached multiple Olympic and world champions in women's figure skating at the Crystal rink in Moscow, building a reputation as one of the sport's most demanding mentors.
Ice dance differs from pairs and singles figure skating by emphasizing rhythm, intricate footwork, and precise synchronisation over high-flying throws or multi-revolution jumps. In international competition, the discipline is judged through detailed technical execution and artistic presentation across both the rhythm dance and free dance segments.
