Danish golfer Jeff Winther won the Danish Golf Championship on Sunday after pipping fellow countryman Rasmus Højgaard in a dramatic finish on home soil.
The 38-year-old ended a four-year wait for his second DP World Tour title, securing a three-shot victory after shooting a five-under-par final round of 67.
Højgaard pressed Winther hard late in the round. He had been trailing by two shots heading into the 17th hole before he sensationally chipped in for an eagle from over a bunker to tie for the lead.
Late Eagle Drama
Højgaard's stay at the top of the leaderboard proved brief. Winther responded immediately on the 16th hole with an eagle of his own, driving his ball onto the green of the 304-yard par four and putting out for the score.
Winther then safely recorded pars on the 17th and 18th holes to set the target in the clubhouse. His five-under 67 gave him a temporary two-shot lead over China's Yanhan Zhou.
Zhou faced an improbable task on the final hole, needing a hole-in-one on the par-three 18th to force a play-off. Instead, the Chinese golfer three-putted for a bogey, confirming Winther's victory at his home tournament by three strokes.
Tournament Background
The DP World Tour is the premier men's professional golf circuit in Europe. A victory on the tour awards prize money, world ranking points, and extended tournament exemptions.
An eagle in golf refers to scoring two strokes below par on a single hole. Both Winther and Højgaard produced spectacular eagles on the back nine, but Winther's bold tee shot on the short 16th par four ultimately proved decisive.
