Portuguese international defender João Cancelo has joined FC Barcelona on a permanent three-year contract until 2029, the Spanish club announced on Thursday.
The 32-year-old full-back arrives on a free transfer to secure a permanent link to Barcelona following two separate loan spells at the Catalan club.
Barcelona confirmed the agreement on their official website, stating that the defender has committed to the club until June 30, 2029.
Cancelo attended the club facilities on Thursday to sign his contract alongside Barcelona president Joan Laporta, vice-president Rafa Yuste, and sporting director Deco.
Pre-season presence and contract signing
The formal ceremony followed Wednesday's final pre-season fixture, where Barcelona won the Joan Gamper trophy with a 2-1 victory against Egyptian side Al-Ahly.
Cancelo attended the match but was not officially presented on the pitch because the formalisation of his contract had not yet been completed.
Previous loan spells at Barcelona
This permanent deal marks Cancelo's third stint with the Spanish champions after two previous loan periods.
He first joined Barcelona on loan from Manchester City for the full 2023/24 season, making 42 appearances while scoring four goals and providing five assists.
Cancelo returned for a second loan spell last season, joining in January from Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal. Playing under manager Hansi Flick, he recorded two goals and three assists in 23 matches.
Career titles and international honours
Cancelo began his senior career at Portuguese side Benfica, where he developed in the youth system before winning a league title in the 2013/14 season despite playing just two matches.
He has since achieved league championship titles across five different European countries, winning domestic leagues in Portugal with Benfica, England with Manchester City, Italy with Juventus, Germany with Bayern Munich, and Spain with FC Barcelona.
His honours also include one UEFA Champions League title with Manchester City and two UEFA Nations League trophies with the Portugal national team.
Summer transfer window additions
Cancelo becomes Barcelona's fifth signing for the 2026/27 season as the club rebuilds its squad.
He joins new arrivals Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi, and Jesse Bisiwu, who signed as forwards, alongside midfielder Rodri.
Rodri previously played with Cancelo at Manchester City and was named the best player at the 2026 World Cup, which was won by Spain.
