Aston Villa club-record signing Johan Manzambi trained alongside his team-mates on Thursday following a knee injury, raising hopes that his competitive debut for the Premier League side could arrive sooner than expected.
The 20-year-old forward joined Villa from German Bundesliga club Freiburg in July in a transfer deal worth up to £60 million. However, he arrived at the West Midlands club carrying an injury and has yet to feature in a match while continuing his recovery program.
Daily Mail Sport understands that Manzambi participated fully in Thursday's training session with the main group. Despite the encouraging step, it remains unclear whether the player will be considered for Saturday's trip to face Hull City.
Aston Villa travel to Hull searching for their first points of the new campaign. Unai Emery's side have endured a difficult start to the season, suffering back-to-back Premier League defeats against Brighton and Arsenal.
Caution over injury recovery
Following Villa's 1-0 home defeat against Arsenal on August 31, Emery expressed caution regarding Manzambi's fitness, while expressing hope that the young attacker would be integrated into group training during the week.
"We must be careful," Emery said after the match at Villa Park. "He had an injury and we want his comeback to be clear and strong, with no risk. Progressively, he is working individually and is starting collectively with the group this week."
Major summer squad overhaul
Manzambi's return comes during a period of significant transition for Villa. The club has embarked on an extensive rebuilding process, making 11 new signings during the summer transfer window after losing several key members of last season's squad.
Villa enjoyed a successful previous campaign in which they lifted the UEFA Europa League trophy and secured qualification for the UEFA Champions League. However, the squad has undergone major changes since that European success.
In addition to senior arrivals, Emery has promoted internal talent into the senior setup. Forward Brian Madjo and midfielder George Hemmings have both been brought into the first-team group.
The overhaul follows high-profile departures from Villa Park. Attacker Morgan Rogers completed a record £117 million transfer to Chelsea this summer, while goalkeeper Emi Martinez also made the move to Stamford Bridge. Midfielder Youri Tielemans, defender Lucas Digne, striker Ollie Watkins and defender Ezri Konsa also departed during a summer of extensive roster changes.
