English manager John Carver is set to be appointed as the new head coach of Polish Ekstraklasa club Radomiak Radom.
According to reporter Marcin Borzecki of Kanal Sportowy, sources indicate that the 61-year-old coach has been chosen to take charge of the Polish top-flight side. Carver had been identified as the preferred candidate by club officials for some time, following earlier reports by journalist Szymon Janczyk.
Radomiak Radom have been searching for a permanent manager since losing Tomasz Kaczmarek, who was bought out of his contract by rival Ekstraklasa club Rakow Czestochowa. Interim duties were subsequently taken over by Rafal Grzyb, though club management had initially left open the possibility of keeping him in the role permanently.
Grzyb's chances of securing the job full-time depended on the team's performance in two consecutive league fixtures. However, those matches did not go according to plan for the temporary manager.
Radomiak first suffered a 2-0 defeat at home against Piast Gliwice. The team then travelled to face reigning Polish champions Lech Poznan, where they were beaten 5-1. While losing away to the champions was not unexpected, the heavy margin of defeat and the performance produced by Radomiak prompted decision-makers to act.
John Carver coaching career
Carver is already familiar with Polish football, having departed Lechia Gdansk earlier this summer following their relegation from the Ekstraklasa. Despite the team's difficult campaign, Carver earned praise for attempting to play an offensive and attractive style of football.
The former Newcastle United manager boasts an extensive coaching resume across European and North American football. In addition to managing Newcastle in the English Premier League, Carver has held head coaching positions at Major League Soccer side Toronto FC and Cypriot club Omonia Nicosia, along with roles at Gateshead, Leeds United and Sheffield United. He also gained international experience by spending several years as assistant manager to Steve Clarke with the Scotland national team.
Radomiak Radom are a professional football club based in Radom, central Poland. The team competes in the Ekstraklasa, the top tier of the Polish football league system, which features 18 clubs competing across a 34-match season from July to May.
Radomiak Radom league position
If Carver's appointment is finalised, he will inherit a team struggling in the lower half of the Ekstraklasa standings. Radomiak currently sit 14th in the table after nine matches, having collected eight points.
The Greens have recorded two victories, two draws and five defeats so far this season. Carver will be tasked with steering the club away from the relegation zone as Radomiak look to rebuild their form.
