Argentine forward Julián Álvarez has requested an immediate transfer from Atlético Madrid to Barcelona and threatened to go on strike from all club activities if the move is denied, according to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo. The 26-year-old international remains determined to complete a transition to Barcelona.
Álvarez expected to speak with Atlético management upon returning from his vacation following the World Cup. However, both head coach Diego Simeone and the club chief executive officer were absent on vacation when he arrived.
The former Manchester City player informed club representatives that he will stand firm on his decision to leave. He stated that the Madrid team should no longer count on him for upcoming activities.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Álvarez believes his manager lacked the courage to address the situation directly. Álvarez had intended to speak with Simeone to reach a solution and did not expect the coach to depart for Ibiza when it was known that the forward was returning on Tuesday to meet in person.
Absence of Club Leadership
The striker has also grown frustrated with Atlético's chief executive officer, who was viewed as the other key figure capable of resolving the contract situation. The executive was similarly away on vacation on Tuesday and could not hold a face-to-face meeting.
Following the failed meeting attempts, Álvarez told people accompanying him that his patience was completely exhausted. He warned that there would be direct consequences following the lack of communication from club officials.
He reiterated his stance by telling team representatives that the club should not rely on him moving forward. He confirmed that he will remain unyielding until his transfer request is granted.
Upcoming Team Training
The consequences of his escalated position are expected to unfold starting Wednesday, August 12, 2026, when Simeone returns to direct team training. With training resuming, the manager will no longer be able to avoid a face-to-face discussion with Álvarez regarding his future.
