Reigning Formula One world champion Lando Norris has committed his future to McLaren until at least 2030 after signing a contract worth up to £30 million a year at the team's factory in Woking.
The 26-year-old British driver announced his decision to team staff on Saturday at McLaren's headquarters in Surrey. He will continue at the organization that has underpinned his racing career since he joined its junior driver programme in 2017 as a test and simulator driver.
Norris has since driven in 163 grands prix, more than any other driver in McLaren history. During that span, he has taken 13 wins, 18 pole positions, and 48 podiums.
Long-term commitment to McLaren
Norris will continue to partner Australian driver Oscar Piastri, who signed a similarly long-term contract extension with McLaren last year.
Addressing the timing of the announcement, Norris said: "It's best for what will motivate them and make them more comfortable and give them a push. So, it's perfect timing from that perspective. I want them to know that there's no other place I'd rather be than right here. And that's a good thought for me to have, but it's also a very good thought for every individual here in McLaren to have, I hope."
Formula One salary comparisons
The £30 million annual deal maintains Norris's status among the grid's best-paid drivers. His salary aligns with Ferrari's Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc and sits slightly ahead of Mercedes' British driver George Russell.
The highest paid drivers in Formula One remain British seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari and Dutch driver Max Verstappen at Red Bull, who both earn £80 million per year in contracts that can rise further with performance bonuses.
Career prospects and future ambitions
Norris expressed a desire to spend his entire Formula One career with the Woking-based outfit. "I'm open to staying at McLaren for the rest of my career," Norris said. "I'd be very, very proud at the end of my career to say that has been the case."
Reflecting on past interest from rival teams, he added: "I've not been someone who's jumped from team to team, or jumped to a potential opportunity to the next potential opportunity. I've stuck with McLaren through times when there was a chance in the past to go elsewhere. And I am very happy to just stay where I am."
McLaren, founded by Bruce McLaren in 1963, is one of the most successful constructors in Formula One history. Based at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, the team competes in the FIA Formula One World Championship, the premier global single-seater motor racing series.
