LIV Golf has officially informed its players that the season finale in Michigan has been canceled, though promotional emails marketing ticket sales unexpectedly continue.
Reports at the end of July indicated that the LIV Golf Michigan Team Championship was set to be scrapped, denying 13 competing teams on the circuit the opportunity to play for a $40 million prize purse. According to The Telegraph, players have now been formally told that the tournament is off.
While LIV Golf has not issued a formal announcement, The Telegraph reported that American television network Fox has removed the event from its broadcast listings. Furthermore, no event infrastructure had been constructed at the host course, The Cardinal at Saint John's in Plymouth, Michigan.
LIV Golf is a breakaway professional golf circuit launched in 2022 as a high-stakes competitor to the PGA Tour. The cancellation means next week's tournament, LIV Golf Indiana, will serve as the final event of the 2026 season after the Saudi Public Investment Fund, Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, announced it would no longer fund the circuit after this season's conclusion.
Ticket Promotions and Schedule Confusion
Despite informing competitors that the Michigan finale is canceled, promotional emails from LIV Golf have continued to market ticket sales to fans. James Corrigan of The Telegraph posted a screenshot of a promotional email sent to prospective buyers with the subject line 'Get your tickets for Aramco LIV Golf Michigan Team Championship 2026 - Grounds before they're gone!'.
Comments under Corrigan's post indicated that while LIV Golf no longer lists the Michigan tournament on its official schedule, users can still purchase tickets by clicking the direct links provided in the promotional email messages.
The decision marks another cancellation following the planned withdrawal of financial backing by the Saudi Public Investment Fund. In June, LIV Golf Louisiana was also canceled from the circuit's schedule.
Uncertainty Surrounding Future Funding and Player Contracts
The disruption comes as the long-term future of the breakaway circuit remains shrouded in uncertainty. Scott O'Neil, the chief executive of LIV Golf, revealed last week that an investor had been lined up to fund the league's operations for the 2027 season.
However, the identity of the prospective investor has not been officially disclosed, and no formal agreements appear to have been signed. Reports indicate that potential funding deals depend on retaining marquee players on the roster, specifically major championship winners Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm.
The conclusion of the current season also remains unclear. It is not known how the team standings will be decided at the Indiana event, with players telling The Telegraph that they "remain in the dark" on how a winner will be determined or whether the $40 million in team prizes will be distributed.
