LIV Golf is set to cancel its 2026 season-ending team championship tournament in Michigan, according to sources reported by FrontOfficeSports. The event, LIV Golf Michigan, was scheduled to take place at The Cardinal at Saint John's Resort in suburban Detroit from August 27 to 30. An official announcement confirming the cancellation of the showpiece event is expected on Wednesday.
The tournament featured a $40 million prize pool, with the winning squad set to take home $11.2 million. Both amounts are lower than last year's event, which had a $50 million total purse and a $14 million winner payout. Michigan marks the second event cancelled by the Saudi-backed rebel tour this season, following the cancellation of LIV Golf Louisiana in April.
Tour Finances and Investor Search
The cancellation comes as the future of LIV Golf remains in doubt after the Saudi Public Investment Fund announced plans to pull its funding at the end of the season. The tour lured high-profile players including Jon Rahm, Cameron Smith, and Bryson DeChambeau from the PGA Tour. In the months since the announcement, players have been left in the dark regarding the future viability of the circuit.
LIV Golf is currently searching for new investors to replace the PIF funding. The circuit is hoping to raise up to $350 million to keep the league operating for a season in 2027.
Doubts regarding the Michigan event have built up for weeks. LIV chief executive Scott O'Neil previously could not guarantee that all four remaining schedule events would be played, though LIV Golf UK did take place. Last week, Martin Kaymer, captain of LIV's Cleeks GC team, told Today's Golfer that the Michigan championship was "highly unlikely" following a captains meeting with O'Neil that left "lingering questions." One source told FrontOfficeSports last month, "I don't think they'll ever get to Michigan."
Remaining Schedule Status
The final three events of the season were all scheduled to take place in the United States. Rumors also surround the potential cancellation of the regular-season finale, LIV Golf Indianapolis, though that tournament remains scheduled for August 20 to 23. LIV Golf New York is also still scheduled to proceed at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey.
