Luka Jović scored twice as AEK Athens beat Iraklis 4-0 in the opening match of the new season, and Serbian media have been quick to praise the striker's start to the campaign.
The 28-year-old forward joined AEK as a free agent in August 2025 and was one of the key figures in the club's run to last season's Greek championship title. He has now scored 24 goals in 46 appearances for the Athens club.
Serbian media hail return to form
The Serbian sports website Meridian Sport published an article asking whether the forward could develop into one of the greatest number nines in AEK's history.
According to the outlet, Jović never forgot how to play football, he simply needed the right environment to rediscover himself. AEK, it said, came into his life at a pivotal moment. When he signed for the club as a free agent in August 2025, he was no longer the wonderkid who had once starred for Red Star Belgrade and Eintracht Frankfurt, nor the expensive project he had been at Real Madrid.
In Athens, though, he appears to have found the environment he needed, Meridian Sport said. The trust placed in him, his defined role and his steady presence in the team allowed him to rebuild his confidence and recall the forward whose performances once had the whole of Europe talking about him.
Comparisons to AEK legends
The website said this is where an interesting conversation about AEK begins. Dušan Bajević and Demis Nikolaidis already hold their own distinct place in the club's history, it noted, but Jović, with the consistency he is showing in front of goal and his presence at the spearhead of the attack, has begun to build his own case.
Whether he can enter the discussion for the best number nine ever to wear the AEK shirt is something only time will tell, Meridian Sport said. What is certain, the outlet added, is that performances like the one against Iraklis mean that discussion has now begun.
