Łukasz Skorupski blunder hands Atalanta late Serie A win

Bologna goalkeeper Łukasz Skorupski made a crucial late error to hand Atalanta a 1-0 victory in their Serie A match in Bergamo on Monday.

The Polish international goalkeeper failed to hold a long-range strike from Serbian midfielder Lazar Samardzić in the sixth minute of stoppage time, allowing the ball to bounce into the net in the final moments of the contest.

The fixture in Bergamo had remained goalless for almost the entire 90 minutes until Samardzić struck from distance. Atalanta attacker Nicola Zalewski entered the match as a substitute in the 55th minute, replacing Belgian forward Charles De Ketelaere as the hosts sought an attacking breakthrough.

Skorupski has spent much of his professional career in Italian football, joining Bologna in 2018 after establishing himself as a reliable top-flight goalkeeper. His international teammate Zalewski represents Poland at senior level and operates as a versatile midfielder for Atalanta in Serie A competition.

Italian media ratings and reaction

Italian sports media were critical of Skorupski following his stoppage-time mistake. Eurosport.it gave the Polish goalkeeper a low rating of 4.5 out of 10, writing that he appeared to sleep for 95 minutes before making a significant error on Samardzić's effort from outside the penalty area.

Zalewski received a slightly higher assessment, earning a score of 5.5 out of 10 for his shift on the pitch. The Italian news outlet described his overall contribution as average, adding that there was very little to comment on regarding his brief performance in the second half.

Serie A standings and season context

The victory maintains a flawless start to the domestic season for Atalanta. The Bergamo club have won both of their opening two league matches to collect six points and sit fifth in the Serie A standings.

In contrast, Bologna FC 1909 face an early-season struggle after opening their domestic campaign with back-to-back defeats. Skorupski and his teammates have yet to score a single point this season and occupy 15th place in the 20-team Italian league standings.
