Olympique Lyonnais defeated Sparta Prague 3-0 on Tuesday night to advance to the Champions League play-off round with a 4-2 aggregate victory. The French club overturned a 2-1 first-leg deficit suffered in the Czech Republic a week earlier.
A crowd of 51,500 spectators attended the match at Parc OL in Decines, filling the stadium in mid-August despite Lyon's disappointing opening performance. The victory keeps Lyon in contention for their first Champions League group stage appearance since the 2019-2020 season. They now advance to face Turkish club Fenerbahce in a two-legged play-off scheduled for August 18 and August 26.
Ernest Nuamah opened the scoring in the 20th minute to put Lyon ahead on the night. The Ghanaian winger had not scored since March 2025 due to a serious knee injury that required nearly 18 months of recovery.
Return of the attacking trio
Lyon manager Paulo Fonseca made drastic tactical changes following the first-leg defeat in Prague. Fonseca replaced his cautious 5-2-2-1 formation, which had featured Corentin Tolisso and Abner supporting Lois Openda, with a classic 4-3-3 system.
The Portuguese manager deployed an attacking trio consisting of Malick Fofana, Ernest Nuamah, and Lois Openda. All three forwards were seeking redemption after a frustrating 2025-2026 season. Fofana was making his first start since suffering an ankle injury in October 2025.
Although Fofana missed scoring opportunities in the 32nd and 68th minutes, he provided constant incisiveness on the left wing. Nuamah was substituted in the 76th minute, while Fofana played until the 85th minute after providing strong defensive effort alongside Openda.
Fonseca disputed criticism of his first-leg selection, attributing the loss in Prague to issues with strategic interpretation and intensity. However, he admitted that Fofana and Nuamah created far more connections on the flanks than in the initial match. He described both players as fast, high quality, and essential to Lyon's attacking setup this season.
Impact of wingers on tactics
Senegalese defender Moussa Niakhate, who delivered a reassuring performance in his return following the World Cup, praised the contribution of the two wingers. Niakhate said Fofana and Nuamah provided vital speed, depth, and one-on-one elimination ability. He noted that without such qualities, unbalancing opposing teams in modern football is far more difficult.
Niakhate added that both players performed effectively despite still recovering full fitness. He joked that the team would give Fofana a friendly slap for failing to score on his chances, while praising Nuamah for finding the net.
Lyon captain Corentin Tolisso emphasized that the wingers altered how opponents must prepare defensively. Tolisso said their speed and individual dribbling capability could force an entire opposing team to retreat on their own, giving Lyon a distinct tactical advantage.
Fenerbahce transfer investments
Lyon now turn their focus to Fenerbahce, whose extensive summer recruitment has drawn praise from Fonseca. The manager noted that Fenerbahce made an extraordinary investment in new signings and entered the upcoming play-off as the natural favorite. However, he emphasized that Lyon intends to compete fiercely against the Turkish side.
Fenerbahce spent 39 million euros this summer to sign former Marseille player Mason Greenwood. The Turkish club also acquired Dutch defender Nathan Ake from Manchester City, Kosovar forward Vedat Muriqi, and Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku, whose pending official transfer is expected to make him eligible for the play-off tie.
The Istanbul club already boasts an array of experienced international players, including N'Golo Kante, Matteo Guendouzi, Nelson Semedo, Milan Skriniar, Marco Asensio, and Kerem Akturkoglu.
Niakhate described the matchup against Fenerbahce as having the atmosphere of a full Champions League tie. He said nothing had come easily for Lyon in recent seasons, but qualifying by defeating such a heavily reinforced team would make the achievement even more memorable. He added that Lyon has nothing to envy regarding Fenerbahce's roster.
Tolisso echoed that determination, stating that whichever side wins the play-off will fully deserve a spot in the Champions League group stage. He said everyone at Lyon shares a strong commitment to reaching the tournament proper.
Financial realities at Lyon
Following the match, Fonseca addressed Lyon's economic situation during his press conference. He urged realism, reminding supporters that current financial conditions at the club differ significantly from past eras.
Fonseca explained that Lyon no longer possesses the financial capacity to spend 20 million or 30 million euros on individual player transfers. However, he pointed out that qualifying for the Champions League group stage would secure approximately 20 million euros directly for the club's finances within two weeks.
