Manchester United are considering a last-minute push to sign a new left-back before the transfer window closes at 11pm on Tuesday following growing concerns over Luke Shaw.
Senior figures at Old Trafford initially planned to delay revamping the club's defensive line until next summer, when Shaw, Harry Maguire, and Lisandro Martinez are out of contract.
United retain 12-month extension options on both Maguire and Martinez, but Sunday's 5-2 Premier League victory against newly promoted Ipswich Town highlighted an urgent need for immediate defensive reinforcements.
Shaw struggled during the match and was left trailing in Abdul Fatawu’s wake as the Ipswich winger set up the opening goal for Leif Davis at Old Trafford.
Prior to kick-off on Sunday, United paraded new £70 million signing Carlos Baleba on the pitch, while fellow summer arrivals Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans made their debuts. Free agent Karl Darlow has also arrived as back-up goalkeeper.
Midfield has been United's primary focus this summer, coming 12 months after a £360 million-plus attack rebuild that brought in Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha.
Luke Shaw Performance and Reaction
Despite United recovering from an opening-day defeat at Hull City to beat Ipswich handsomely, doubts surrounding Shaw have persisted. The 31-year-old is United's longest-serving player by a considerable distance after 12 years at the club and started every Premier League fixture last season.
However, after being left out of England's World Cup squad during the summer, Shaw has endured a difficult start to the new campaign and admitted after Sunday's game that his form must improve.
"I’m disappointed in myself," Shaw admitted. "With my experience, I must be doing much better for the first goal, that’s not me. We showed the right mentality. It’s never nice to lose the first game when everyone is so optimistic, but we’ve got a lot of experience to block out the noise."
Shaw insisted United maintain ambition to challenge at the top of the table. "The objective has to be to win the Premier League, and last week’s result doesn’t mean we can’t do that," he said. "I’m sure there will be a couple additions to the squad which are needed to make us stronger."
Lewis Hall Transfer Fee and Alternatives
Director of football Jason Wilcox and the recruitment team led by Christopher Vivell have been evaluating left-back options all summer, a search heightened by Tyrell Malacia leaving on a free transfer.
United maintain a long-standing interest in Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall. However, Newcastle are reluctant to sell the 21-year-old after losing Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, and Bruno Guimaraes, and value Hall at more than £75 million.
Unless United submit a bid exceeding £75 million before Tuesday's 11pm deadline, any deal for Hall will be postponed until a future window. United adopted a similar strategy with 22-year-old Cameroon international Baleba, delaying his £70 million signing for a year after Brighton demanded over £100 million.
Head coach Michael Carrick faces a demanding schedule with United returning to Champions League football. Expecting Shaw to start every match is considered unrealistic, particularly after United played only 40 matches last season, the bare minimum required.
Short-Term Loan Options and Squad Cover
United have assessed alternative full-back targets, including Brighton’s Ferdi Kadioglu, Aston Villa’s Ian Maatsen, and Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas.
A loan agreement is considered United's most feasible option as deadline day approaches. Old Trafford officials have inquired about Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde, though late-window choices remain limited.
If no external signing is completed, Carrick must rely on internal alternatives. Right-backs Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui are both capable of switching to the left flank, where Mazraoui regularly features for Morocco.
Patrick Dorgu was signed as a left wing-back but has produced stronger performances in higher positions. Meanwhile, academy graduate Harry Amass served as Shaw’s understudy during pre-season, although Burnley are currently interested in taking the young defender.
Lisandro Martinez also possesses experience playing on the left side of defence, while left-footed defensive midfielder Baleba has been noted as a potential emergency option.
Deadline Day Priorities and Squad Outlook
Facing high expectations and title ambitions, heading into the season without dedicated left-back cover represents a significant risk. United showed attacking quality against Ipswich through Bruno Fernandes’ hat-trick, Marcus Rashford’s return to scoring form at Old Trafford, and Kobbie Mainoo’s impressive display in midfield.
Nevertheless, defensive issues remain unresolved. United conceded two set-piece goals in their defeat at Hull, and Martinez was punished for a costly error that led to Ipswich's second goal on Sunday.
While the broader overhaul of United's defence is scheduled for next summer, decision-makers must choose whether to intervene before the transfer window closes.
The only other potential transfer business at Old Trafford before Tuesday's deadline would be searching for a replacement for Joshua Zirkzee, should the Dutch forward finalize a return to Italy. Otherwise, United's final push remains focused entirely on solving their left-back dilemma.
