Maria Sakkari defeated Zeynep Sonmez 6-3, 6-2 in the second round of the Toronto tournament to secure a place in the round of 32.
The Greek tennis player, seeded number 29 in the tournament draw, will face Coco Gauff in the third round following her straight-sets victory.
Sonmez started the match stronger by breaking Sakkari's first service game to build an early 2-0 lead. Sakkari responded by raising her level of play, taking control of the rallies, and winning five consecutive games with two service breaks to turn the opening set around to 5-2.
The Turkish player held serve to reduce the deficit to 5-3. Sakkari then closed out the set 6-3, although she needed to save a break point and missed three set points before finishing the game.
Second set progression
Sakkari carried her momentum into the second set by breaking Sonmez's opening service game to take a 2-0 lead. Sonmez won the following game to make it 2-1, but Sakkari responded with another three-game streak to extend her advantage to 5-1.
Sonmez saved two match points to hold serve and narrow the margin to 5-2. Sakkari then served out the match without further difficulty to complete the 6-2 set victory and advance to the third round.
