Maria Zodzik won the silver medal for Poland in the women high jump final at the European Athletics Championships after clearing 1.95 metres.
The Belarusian-born high jumper secured second place behind Ukraine's Yaroslava Mahuchikh, who won her third consecutive European title with a height of 1.97 metres. Montenegro's Marija Vukovic took the bronze medal.
Zodzik was Poland's sole representative in the final after teammates Wiktoria Miaso and Maja Slodzinska failed to advance from qualification. Miaso was eliminated with a mark of 1.88 metres and Slodzinska exited at 1.80 metres, while Zodzik passed through smoothly as one of 15 athletes to clear the 1.91-metre qualifying target.
The European Athletics Championships serve as the flagship biennial track and field competition for European nations. Under international athletics rules, high jump competitions award medals based on maximum height cleared, using fewer total missed attempts across the contest as a tiebreaker.
Nervous start at opening heights
Despite her confident qualification performance, Zodzik endured a tense start in the final. She missed her first two attempts at the opening height of 1.83 metres before clearing the bar on her third and final try to stay in the competition.
She regained her composure at 1.88 metres, clearing the height on her first attempt. Four competitors failed to clear 1.88 metres, including medal favorite Angelina Topic of Serbia.
The next height of 1.92 metres presented another obstacle. Zodzik missed her first attempt before brushing the bar slightly on her second try, though the bar remained on the uprights to leave just five jumpers competing for the podium.
Lead at 1.95 metres and final medal battle
Zodzik temporarily took sole leadership of the contest at 1.95 metres. She cleared the bar on her first attempt, despite again making slight contact with it.
Ukraine's Iryna Heraszczenko and Germany's Christina Honsel were both eliminated after failing all three tries at 1.95 metres. Their departure guaranteed Zodzik at least a bronze medal.
Mahuchikh and Vukovic subsequently cleared 1.95 metres on their second attempts. Because Zodzik was the only jumper to clear 1.95 metres on her first attempt, she held the top position entering the next height.
The competition decided its champion at 1.97 metres. Mahuchikh, the defending champion from Ukraine, cleared the height on her first try to take command of the final. Zodzik struggled with her jumps at 1.97 metres, failing her first two attempts before knocking the bar down a third time.
The final outcome depended on Vukovic, who had also missed her first two jumps at 1.97 metres. When the Montenegrin athlete failed her third attempt, Zodzik clinched the silver medal based on her earlier first-time clearance at 1.95 metres, leaving Vukovic with bronze.
One year prior to her European success, Zodzik earned Poland's only medal at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo when she claimed silver in the high jump. That performance established her as Poland's primary podium contender in women's field events.
